Specifically designed single-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (ssDNA) (alternatively, ribonucleic acid (RNA) or a synthetic nucleic acid analogue such as locked nucleic acid (LNA) or peptide nucleic acid (PNA)) with a defined (known) nucleotide sequence used to detect complementary DNA or RNA sequence in a sample.
Notes: - Reporter probe is usually labelled (radioactively, immunologically, or by fluorescent, electroactive, or other species to produce a specific signal upon hybridization).
- Similar to capture probes, nucleic acid signalling probes (or nucleic acid aptamers) can be applied in studies of nucleic acid interactions with proteins and other ligands.
