Mass spectrometric technique that serves to generate peptide fragment ions through the fragmentation of peptide precursor ions via different physicochemical processes in an ion source.
Note: This approach based on the
top-down proteomics is an alternative to
bottom-up proteomics. The main advantages include the potential for
\(\pu{100\%}\) sequence coverage of the protein and improved detection of post-translational modifications.
