In a PICT state formed by intramolecular charge transfer in an electron donor ($\ce{D}$)/acceptor ($\ce{A}$) molecule, the $\ce{D}$ and $\ce{A}$ subgroups have an overall planar configuration, with substantial electronic coupling of $\ce{D}$ and $\ce{A}$.
