Compounds having the structure $\ce{RC#N}$; thus C-substituted derivatives of hydrocyanic acid, $\ce{HC#N}$. In systematic nomenclature, the suffix nitrile denotes the triply bound $\ce{#N}$ atom, not the carbon atom attached to it.
