Hemiacetals having the structure $\ce{R2C(OH)OR}$ ($\ce{R} \neq \ce{H}$), derived from ketones by formal addition of an alcohol to the carbonyl group. This term, once abandoned, has been reinstated as a subclass of hemiacetals.
