Dosage form designed to release the drug contained therein at a continuous and controlled rate for a longer period of time that can normally be achieved with its conventional, nonsustained counterpart.
Notes:
  1. Per-oral administration of a single dose of a sustained-release product increases the duration of therapeutic action of the drug, beyond that achieved normally with a single dose of the corresponding non-sustained conventional counterpart.
  2. Sustained-release injectables are also available.
  3. Other terms used to describe the same concept include: "controlled release", "extended release", "long-acting", "gradual release", "modified release", "prolonged action", and "slow release".
