Aqueous solution obtained after adding water to a solid substance (e.g., sediment, tailings, drilling mud, or dredging spoil), shaking the mixture, then centrifuging or filtering it or decanting the supernatant.
Note: An operational definition is water collected from vigorous shaking (\(\pu{15 min}\) to \(\pu{30 min}\)) of one part sediment with four parts water. This mixture is allowed to settle, and the liquid phase is centrifuged and may be filtered.
