layer-by-layer assembly

https://doi.org/10.1351/goldbook.13835
Process whereby multilayered structures of molecules or particles of a substance are assembled on a solid substrate by sequential adsorption of monolayers held together by noncovalent interactions.
Notes:
  1. The material at the liquid surface need not necessarily be present as a solid monolayer.
  2. Layer-by-layer assembly is often used to alternately transfer polyelectrolytes that are positively and negatively charged.
