tail suspension test

Procedure in which a mouse is suspended by its tail and the time spent attempting to right itself is observed.
Notes:
  1. Most often used to test antidepressants, which usually increase the time the animal spends in escape-directed righting behavior.
  2. Both the tail suspension test and the swimming test are sometimes referred to as behavioral despair tests.
