A characteristic of the separation of two adjacent peaks. It may be expressed according to the equation: \[R_{\rm{AB}} = 2\ \frac{|d_{\rm{R}}\left(\rm{B}\right)\,-\,d_{\rm{R}}\left(\rm{A}\right)|}{|w\left(\rm{B}\right)\,+\,w\left(\rm{A}\right)|}\] where \(R_{\rm{AB}}\) is the resolution, \(d_{\rm{R}}(\rm{A})\) and \(d_{\rm{R}}(\rm{B})\) are the retention distances (time or volume) of each eluted component A and B, and \(w(\rm{A})\) and \(w(\rm{B})\) are the respective widths of each peak at its base.
