A technique used to produce proteins with altered or novel amino acid sequences. The methods used are:
- Transcription and translation systems from synthesized lengths of DNA or RNA with novel sequences.
- Chemical modification of 'normal' proteins.
- Solid-state polypeptide synthesis to form proteins.
