Reaction, generally reversible, that involves the penetration of a host material by guest species without causing a major structural modification of the host.
Notes: - Intercalation can refer to the @I03058@ of a @G02711@ species into a one-, two- or three-dimensional host structure.
- The @G02711@ species is not distributed randomly but occupies positions predetermined by the structure of the host material.
- Examples of intercalation reactions are the @I03058@ of lithium into layered TiS2 [LixTiS2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1)] and of potassium into the layers of @G02684@ (C8K).
