Polymer composed of macromolecules containing carbon-silicon linkages in the backbone: \[\ce{-SiR^{1}R^{2}\bond{-}CR^{3}R^{4}\bond{-}}\] where \(\ce{R^1}\), \(\ce{R^2}\), \(\ce{R^3}\), and \(\ce{R^4}\) are each hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, or heteroaryl.
Note: A polycarbosilane containing, in addition to silanediyl groups, exclusively alkanediyl (formerly alkylene) or substituted alkanediyl constitutional repeating units is referred to as a polysilalkylene, whereas that involving exclusively arenediyl (formerly arylene) constitutional repeating units is referred to as a polysilarylene.
