Administration of drugs directly to the respiratory tract, mostly by aerosols.
Notes:
  1. Since a drug is delivered directly to the site of action, lower dose is needed by this route than by other routes, e.g., the gastrointestinal or parenteral routes.
  2. The incidence and the intensity of side effects are generally lower when this route is used as compared to other routes of drug administration.
