Administration of drugs directly to the respiratory tract, mostly by aerosols.
Notes:
- Since a drug is delivered directly to the site of action, lower dose is needed by this route than by other routes, e.g., the gastrointestinal or parenteral routes.
- The incidence and the intensity of side effects are generally lower when this route is used as compared to other routes of drug administration.
