Component of antibody and T-cell receptor (TCR) diversity that is generated by the recombination of variable (V), diversity (\(D\), for immunoglobulin heavy chains, and for TCR \(\upbeta\) and \(\ce{\updelta\ chains}\)), and joining (J) gene segments.
