Process in which multiply protonated molecules interact with low-energy electrons followed by fragmentation. The capture of an electron by the even-electron cation \(\ce{[M + nH]^{n+}}\) liberates energy and reduces its charge state, thus producing the corresponding \(\ce{[M + nH]^{(n - 1)+.}}\) odd-electron ion, which readily fragments.
