Non-coding segment of DNA consisting of short nucleotide sequences (
\(\pu{2\!{-}\! 6}\) base pairs), typically occurring in
\(\pu{10\!{-}\! 100}\) consecutive (tandem) repeats.
Notes: - The number of repeats varies between members of any given species.
- Microsatellites are used as markers in determining genetic diversity, in identifying important genetic traits, in forensic science, in population studies, and in determining paternity.
