Growth factor of the transforming growth factor \(\upbeta\!\) (TGF-\(\upbeta\!\)) superfamily, originally identified as a gonadal factor that stimulated secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone, also involved in many aspects of development including mesodermal induction (see mesenchyme), hematopoiesis, and neuronal differentiation.
