Binding of a protein to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) independent of the nucleotide sequence or the conformation of the DNA, often with a strong contribution of electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged sugar-phosphate backbone of the DNA and basic amino acid residues of the protein.
