Lipid molecules involved in intracellular signalling and the regulation of cell death, immune response, or inflammation.
Notes:
- Signalling lipids include diacylglycerol, phosphatidic acid, phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate (the source of polyphosphorylated inositols), arachidonic acid-derived mediators (icosanoids, prostaglandins and leukotrienes), sphingolipid-derived mediators (ceramides, sphingosine, sphingosine-1-phosphate), or cholesterol-derived steroid hormones (androgens, estrogens, progestogens, mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids).
- Broadly defined term referring to any lipid messenger that binds a protein target, such as a receptor, kinase or phosphatase, which in turn mediates the effects of these lipids on specific cellular responses.
