Hydroxy group that originates from the aldehydic or ketonic group of a monosaccharide after ring closure.
Notes:
  1. A functional group in one of two stereoisomers of a cyclic saccharide that differs only in its configuration at the hemiacetal or hemiketal carbon, which is also called the anomeric carbon. An anomer is a special type of epimer.
  2. The group is sometimes called, incorrectly, "anomeric hydroxyl group".
