Classification of immunoglobulins based on antigenic and structural differences of the heavy peptide chain.
Notes:
- There are five classes: \(\ce{IgG}\), \(\ce{IgA}\), \(\ce{IgM}\), \(\ce{IgD}\), and \(\ce{IgE}\).
- Immunoglobulin subclass (isotype) represents the subdivision of an immunoglobulin class based on structural and antigenic differences in the heavy peptide chain. Four human \(\ce{IgG}\) subclasses and two \(\ce{IgA}\) subclasses have currently been recognised; \(\ce{IgM}\) subclasses have been postulated; \(\ce{IgD}\) and \(\ce{IgE}\) subclasses are unknown.
