Coating of solution or slurry drawn to uniform film by use of a knife edge or doctor blade.

Note
The term has been borrowed from printing and coating technologies. It is believed that it derives from the blades employed in letter press equipment that were used to wipe so-called ductor rolls, the term "ductor" becoming doctor over time.
