Measurement method of Raman spectroscopy by which the intensity of vibrational bands in the Raman spectra of molecules within a few nanometers of the surface of microscopically rough metals, metal colloids, and metal nanoparticles is increased by up to \(\pu{E6}\).
Notes:
- The metals that give the largest enhancement are silver, gold, and copper, but this phenomenon has been reported to occur with a range of other metals.
- Other mechanisms of enhancement are known, but the common usage of SERS is with a metal or related systems and implies enhancement through interaction with a surface plasmon.
