Polymers composed of macromolecules containing exclusively \(\upsigma\)-bonded benzene or substituted benzene rings in the backbone:
where \(\ce{R^{1}}\), \(\ce{R^{2}}\), \(\ce{R^{3}}\) and \(\ce{R^{4}}\) are each hydrogen or an univalent group (structure-based polymer class name).
Note:
Polyphenylenes are a subclass of polyarylenes and also a subclass of conjugated polymers except for poly(1,3-phenylene)s which are not conjugated polymers.
